prepared a Master Plan and construction documents for a
deck system located to take advantage of views to Storm
Peak and South Yampa Valley.
The house is located on a steep site in a densely developed
subdivision off of Ridge Road in Steamboat Springs. During
construction, the owner opted not to complete work on the
site plan that included a series of retaining walls supporting
a terrace on the downhill side of the house. Once the house
was complete the steepness of the terrain and proximity
of neighboring homes precluded access for construction of
the terrace.
The large dimension timber-on-concrete pier construction
of the deck eliminated problems related to access, and reduced
the overall cost of creating an accessible outdoor space
on the site. The oversize timber materials complement the
post and beam style of the architecture.
