Prairie Waters: North Campus Land Management Plan

The City of Aurora's Water Utility is in the process of developing a 400 acre water filtration site in the South Platte River Valley in Weld County, Colorado. The area is being converted from agricultural to a semi-industrial use, including a series of infiltration basins and pumps isolated from ground water by a perimeter, sub-grade slurry wall. The landscape will be restored to short to mid-grass prairie.

Landscape treatments vary through time as construction of the treatment facility proceeds. The matrix reflects the interaction of the changing conditions.

The success of the restoration and long term maintenance of the landscape is essential to the overall success of the project. Parks & Gardens developed a landscape management plan that defines a sequence for landscape restoration that coordinates with the contract for construction of the filtration facilities, and also defines ongoing maintenance activities for long-term management of the site.

The plan includes erosion control and weed management components, and provides the Utility with a manual defining both required maintenance and a menu of Best Management Practices for repair and restoration.

The short to mid-grass prairie will blend with this agricultural context.
