| The landscape at Asbury
is made up of a series of landscape areas each with its
own palette of plant material.
The intention is to create a perimeter landscape consistent
with the best examples in the city, and an interior landscape
that is unique and memorable. The plan will employ the principles
of xeric planting and sustainability.
Shade trees in the courtyard create a sense of a 'green'
landscape and reduce glare and ambient temperatures. Because
the area for planting is limited and surrounded by paving,
site preparation includes over-excavating a three foot depth
zone running continuously from north to south, and back-filling
with “gap graded” or “structural soil”
which will allow for full compaction for paving while maintaining
the soils capacity for transporting air and water, and allowing
root growth continuously along the corridor parallel to
the face of the building.
Roof drainage will be routed to the planting areas in the
courtyard and alleys to augment the irrigation system.

New
details combine structural soils and porous paving to provide
below-grade detention as well as sufficient rooting area
for trees shading the paving.
