Denver Zoo: Duck Lake Restoration

This illustration shows replacing the existing lake edge steps with viewing areas bounded by a low concrete curb or wall, sub-irrigated meadows that provide heron habitat and water quality.

The “Schematic Plan for Improvements to Water Quality and Wildlife Habitat at Duck Lake” grew out of the Duck Lake Management Plan. The Schematic Plan provides solutions to a number of problems identified in the Management Plan, including:

  • Repair to eroded features that threaten existing habitat and contribute to poor water quality
  • Developing sustainable urban bird habitat including cormorant and night heron, and limiting the attractiveness of Duck Lake to the resident population of Canada Geese whose presence has been a major factor in the degradation of the lake.
  • Providing ramp access for regular maintenance of the lake.
  • Increasing the supply of water to the lake within the constraints defined by the existing agreement between Denver Water and the CCD Parks and Recreation Department.

The plan also includes a geotechnical investigation that establishes a reliable set of baseline data for design for improvements to the lake.

The Schematic Plan is fully coordinated with other existing and proposed improvements including the Denver Zoo’s Millennium Infrastructure Master Plan, City and County of Denver Wastewater Management Division’s Montclair Basin Storm Drainage Master Plan, and City and County of Denver Lakes annual sediment monitoring data collection. Participants included City and County of Denver Department of Parks and Recreation, Denver Zoo and Denver Water Board.

Improvements include narrowing the park road to create space for grass lined swales consistent in appearance with the sub-irrigated meadows to filter storm water fl owing draining to Duck Lake.
