DeBoer Waterway: Denver, CO

Converting two acres of bluegrass to low water use plantings and native prairie grasses reduces water use by up to 500,000 gallons each year.

Parks & Gardens has prepared a landscape improvement plan to complement the restoration of the DeBoer Waterway as part of the 5280’ Trail. The plan takes advantage of several different funding sources aimed at restoring and revitalizing Denver’s City Park. The Waterway is one of several, historic, water based design components located in City Park and was restored in conjunction with stormwater management improvements at Ferril Lake. It is located in a portion of the park that had formerly served as the City’s Arboretum, which is itself the focus of a restoration initiative defined in the Master Plan.

The taxonomic principles for landscape improvements and the planting palette integrate a contemporary approach of linking native plant communities together along the length of the waterway. The garden also expands the City’s bluegrass conversion project converting significant acreage of bluegrass to native species to conserve water and reduce maintenance and mowing requirements.
